When I gave up refined sugar I was desperate for options that replaced traditional Thanksgiving pies with a healthy alternative. My family relies on good pies from my kitchen, so I wanted something that would stand up to the family taste test, while being something we could all enjoy. Taking a lot of notes from Raw Foodists, I learned to use dates as a powerful sweetener. This is how my Date Apple Pie was born.

The first time I made it, I didn’t tell anyone. Instead, I made a traditional sugar pie as well, and put them both out to conduct my own version of a blind taste test. I was shocked when my date pie was actually preferred. It has a deep caramel flavor that offers an added layer of satisfaction than a sugar pie does, and that made it the favorite choice.

Since then I’ve been making Date Apple Pies exclusively for Thanksgiving, and they are always a hit. So even if you don’t have an aversion to refined sugar, give this recipe a try. You may be surprised by the results.

Date Apple Pie Recipe

Last week we learned how to make The Perfect Pie Crust, and that is a great recipe to use with this pie. I made sure to teach you the technique without any fancy equipment too, so anyone can do it. But if you find yourself not wanting to bother with that step, there are some nice ready made pie crusts on the market.

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  • Roll out your bottom pie crust and place it into your dish by rolling it up onto your rolling pin and unrolling over the dish. (Keep your top crust refrigerated until the pie filling is finished.)

  • Pit your dates (even if your dates say they’re pitted check them thoroughly, as they are usually pitted by machine and not all of them will be pit-less).

  •  Now add your dates to a saucepan with 3/4 C water and cook on medium, mashing the dates as you stir, until it turns into a paste.

Once this becomes a paste (which only takes about 5 min), set it aside.

  • Now it’s time to peel and chop your apples. Make sure to make the apple pieces similar sizes so they cook evenly, and small enough that they’re bite size.

Now’s the fun part.

  1. Cube 1/4 Cup of unsalted butter and set in a bowl.
  2. Layer 1/3 of your apples in the bottom of your pie dish.
  3. Sprinkle a layer of cinnamon over the apples.
  4. Layer cubes of butter (about 5), spaced out over the surface.
  5. Spread half your date mixture over the pie.
  6. Repeat with a second layer.

For your last layer, spread the remainder of your apples over the top and sprinkle with cinnamon. It should be mounding higher than the edge of your dish as the apples will shrink during the cooking process.

  • Now take out your top crust and roll it out.
  • Cut slits in the top for the steam to vent.

  • Trim the edge of the crust so that is even all the way around. If you have some areas with not enough crust, do some patchwork, piecing on your excess crust in the areas that need it.

  • Crimp the edges of the top and bottom crust together, pushing the crust upward with your thumb in between two fingers pushing down. Continue all the way around.

  • Now brush the top of the pie with your egg wash, making sure not to let it pool anywhere. (You can also add pretty designs made from excess crust if you want. I like to make leaves or pumpkins.)

  • Now bake at 375°F for 15 min. (I set a baking sheet on the rack below my pie, as apple pies tend to drip.)
  • Remove from oven to add foil on edges of pie to prevent burning, and turn oven down to 350°F.

My family relies on good pies from my kitchen, so I wanted something that would stand up to my perfectionist standard.

  • Bake at 350° for 45 min, or until crust is golden brown and apples are soft.
